Having to complete home based learning for the kids for the remainder of the school year, we (non home school moms) have to be more hands on with eduction at home than ever. For the first week or so, I was super confident, like okay we got this but as time passed I started running out of things for them to do. This was especially difficult for James (my 10 yr old), I knew he needed to be doing a STEM camp/activity of sorts but I had no idea where to start.
When iD Tech approached me to partner with their virtual tech camp I was truly elated. Their timing could not have been more perfect and their fun course offerings were the icing on the cake. To know little James is to know how much he loves both Minecraft and Roblox. With their programs he would have the opportunity to learn how to build worlds for both, through home based learning. Personal interest aside, here are 5 reasons why your home based learning routine should include a virtual STEM e-course:
With game developing and coding you will get it wrong many times before you get it right. It helps them to understand the importance of continuing past failures and offers positive reinforcement when they finally produce the result they’re looking for. In short, it builds character.
When learning to code, children will need to take a vague idea and use their problem solving skills to turn it into something effective. They need to be able to see a large problem and break it down into smaller pieces in order to solve it one step at a time. Coding helps them to develop this way of thinking and these types of thinking skills are highly sought after in the workforce.
Studies show that girls are 10 times more likely to major in computer science if they’re introduced to it early in life. Helping your daughters foster a love for STEM early can help bridge the gender gap in STEM based careers. Help them know that it’s okay to create stuff that aren’t just about pastel colors, princesses and rainbows. No judgement if they love those things because Zoe certainly does but she’s learning how to code and build games too; it helps that she loves to watch her big bro show off his skills.
Being that big James (my husband) has a STEM based career this one is huge for our family. A child who has learned to code or develop software will have more employment opportunities available to them in the future, no matter which industry they decide to enter from technology to retail to finance. Presently there is a huge shortage of talent in the coding/software industry and because software engineers are hard to come by their salaries can be at a higher level.
ID Tech is the worlds #1 STEM summer camp program for children ages 7-19, but given the current climate the are now offering full virtual sessions. Whether your kids are on full home based learning plans due to Covid-19 school closures or you wanted to keep them learning over the summer, iD Techs online courses are a great way to sharpen their minds from the comfort of your own home.

They have both online tech camps that run in a virtual group setting and private lessons, so you can choose whatever best suits your child’s needs. The tech classes can help you keep them on a schedule, while building life changing skills and giving them a chance to socialize safely. With over 20 years of experiences and 450,000 alumni, iD Tech can transform your child’s love for apps and video games (hint Minecraft and Fortnite) into a foundation for college and amazing careers.
We opted for the one week Roblox camp to start, meaning James had a 2 hour class at the same time every day for a week. He had so much fun connecting with his instructor and classmates and then showing his dad and I what he learned after dinner. The best part of this experience is that it eliminates the guilt that normally comes with screen time.

This is awesome Tina! My son loves STEM. He was in a STEM camp during the summer and during the school year, I’m definitely looking into this.
James has been coding for hours every day since his camp, make sure to let me know if you guy try it!
Love this Tina. Also love the point about getting girls started in STEM early. Will definitely look into IDTech for Kobe.
Yes, we have to help our girls bridge the gender gap. I know that’s extra important for you being a woman in Tech!
I sent this straight to one of my friends! He loves STEM and wants to be a video game designer! This is perfect. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for reading and sharing!
I’ve been wanting to get my son engaged into something other than video games~ I’m hoping he’s open to checking it out. Tweens can be cranky! Thanks for sharing!
I am not ready for that Tween phase but I def hope he’s into checking it out too. Little James has really enjoyed it!
Thanks Tina! Kameron currently has a Kano Computer and Harry Potter wand, but this program seems a lot more engaging. We will definitely look into this. Thanks again!
